Father Kleinsorge-a non-Japanese citizen affected by the detonation
Father Kleinsorge was a German priest who was a victim that has his story told in the book Hiroshima by John Hersey. He had been laying on his cot when he saw the bright flash light up the sky. He was a normal priest who worked with his fellow Jesuits, helping out others. After the detonation, Father Kleinsorge's life was changed forever. After the detonation, he helped other survivors and tried to get medical attention to the injured and cared for them. He even became a Japanese citizen and changed his name to Father Wilhelm Takakura. But Kleinsorge would also suffer from the bomb.
He had radation poisoning in his system. Father Kleinsorge continued to do his duty as a priest. He began instructing a mother and two daughters at Noborimachi after the bomb and he would go to them "Feverish or not, he went to them, always on foot, every evening" (112). Father Kleinsorge was dedicated to his work but was exhausted and unhealthy. He went to the hospital many times throughout the rest of his life. He had low white blood cells counts and felt faint much of the time. When he died, he left behind a legacy of kindness and charity. His fellow fathers and brothers of the Nagatsuka Novitiate "Noticed that there was almost always fresh flowers at that grave" (118). Father Kleinsorge lived a life of helping others and people missed him dearly. But his life was interrupted by something that would eventually end his it. Would you want your friend or collegue to end up as he did?
